Our third baby boy arrived about 4 months ago. He'll probably be our last baby, so I'm in the mood to spoil him. I'm the third baby in my family, so I feel like I have a special connection on the "being Number 3" front. I had a number of fabrics left over from a Yo-Yo dog I made for my first boy, I added in a few more baby boy blues and started on the long quest of making 1" (finished) squares. I'm thinking of making this bib style into a pattern. What do you think? I really like the way this shape sits around baby's neck. |
A parcel arrived today from Amazon! The first wave of several books I've ordered recently. And Yay! my 1930's Farmer's Wife book was amongst them. I'm so excited to be joining this quilt-a-long that I've already printed out the first two quilt blocks and I'm umming and ahhing over which fabrics to work with first - I don't want to work with my favourites straight away do I?!
The quilt-a-long starts in September and you can find all the details on verykerryberry's blog or click on the icon below. Watch this space for my creations soon!
And at last... my finished basket. My fabric Easter eggs are yet to come.
So what's all the hype about the Swoon pattern by Camille Roskelley? Wow that pattern took the quilting world up in it's storm! It's been around for a few years now but it's still got people in a frenzy. For me, it all started when I looked through my stash of fabrics. It's not huge, but there are some lovely fabrics in there. I found a Layer cake of Rouenneries by French General for Moda. This bundle is a few years old now and pretty hard to get hold of, if you're after some extra fabric pieces. So with this fabric in hand and the desire for a small project which would challenge me with new piecing skills, I roamed the internet in search of the perfect pattern to compliment these fabrics. Not an easy task, I quickly discovered.
First problem: A pattern to complement the fabric. Solution: I was totally inspired by Blue.Ridge.Girl. I decided that the Swoon was for me too. I think it's the best pattern to show off the Rouenneries fabric. Next problem: I've only got a Layer cake of fabric. Solution: The mini Swoon! I hope to be able to add to the mini Swoon pattern to make a bigger quilt, but that's going to depend on how far my Layer cake goes and if I can source any more fabric. I really want to complete a quilt without having to purchase more fabric though. That said, of course I'm going to need more fabric - how will I complete the sashing and corner posts? Having finished the top of My First Quilt, it's time for a smaller, more manageable project. I chose a cushion called "Brambles" for The Rivendale Collection by Sally Giblin. Fabric Patch stock a number of her quilted object patterns. However, I'm not a fan of the colours Sally has used, so I chose some girly pink fabrics from my ever increasing stash. No Charm Packs or Jelly Rolls for this project, I really enjoyed browsing my fabrics and coordinating my selection. When it comes to girly colour combinations, pink and "Tiffany blue" would have to be my favourites.
Nine years ago a dear friend (who lives in a different city) did a quilting course. She attend the course once a week and learnt a different patch work technique each week, which she finished prior to the next lesson. By the end of the course she had a beautiful quilt which is still put to very good use today. Even today, I still wish someone in my city would do a similar course. At the time I worked across the road from a quilting shop, so I decided to pop in and see what the attraction was all about. My eyes lit up and I spent quite some time browsing fabric and a few quilting magazines. I came upon a quilt that really caught my eye. I didn't like the colours though, so, with the assistance of one of the retail assistants, I set about choosing fabrics that I liked in order to complete my chosen "First Quilt". Of course there was no pattern. The wonderful ladies from Cushla's Village Fabrics worked out the pattern and wrote it all down for me.
Kathie De Palo called her quilt "Shame about the Green", and I've given my quilt the same name, but for very different reasons. I don't particularly like the green, and the more I look at it the less I like it!! Towards the end of piecing, I rushed my work and made a fairly obvious mistake down my last column. There's also a small error in the top left hand corner, probably from not understanding the pattern. Too eager to start my next project I've decided to leave it and put the error down to being my "first time". I'll update this blog when I finally have it properly finished! |
