The first of 100 (!!) sample sized treasures from The Farmer's Wife 1930's book by Laurie Aaron Hird. I'm really excited to be quilting along with this - how many times have I said that already?? I cut out all my pieces for the first block, named Addie, and found it pretty fiddly and a little frustrating. I'm ok with the small size of fabric pieces, having done several Swoon blocks, so I was surprised when this got me on edge. Then I discovered the paper piecing instructions and I've now learnt how to paper piece! Pretty clever if I do say so myself! There are a few tutorials on paper piecing around and I found a few on YouTube which were really helpful, you'll find one that suits your style of learning. You don't need any special paper, I found my A4 printer paper works just fine - but I'll probably need to replace my sewing machine needle a little more regularly. The key is to place your first fabric piece on the back of your template paper piece, place it with the right side of the fabric facing you. From that point on, always place your fabrics "right side together". So my second block - Aimee - is paper pieced and I'm really happy with the result. However I'm not so happy with my fabric selection. I like the fabrics themselves and I think they all work well together, just not in this block. It's a bit busy for me. I'm sure I'll get better with practice and I'm looking forward to the more difficult piecing in the next few weeks and the opportunity to improve my fabric selections. It's a great learning experience, come join in the fun! |

A parcel arrived today from Amazon! The first wave of several books I've ordered recently. And Yay! my 1930's Farmer's Wife book was amongst them. I'm so excited to be joining this quilt-a-long that I've already printed out the first two quilt blocks and I'm umming and ahhing over which fabrics to work with first - I don't want to work with my favourites straight away do I?!
The quilt-a-long starts in September and you can find all the details on verykerryberry's blog or click on the icon below. Watch this space for my creations soon! |
